Modern Bedroom Design: No More Frumpy Florals

By Ralph Polson

Modern families are choosing to remove the frumpy floral design from generations past. Today’s modern home may utilize a small amount of floral objects but try and stay clear of being completely overwhelmed by flowers on every surface, especially in the bedroom. Many couples and singles alike enjoy having a relaxing environment that does not remind them of their grandmother’s old fashioned bedroom or stuffy sitting room. So for modern bedroom design, the key is no more frumpy florals in anyone’s room, especially the master.

From Flowers to Geometric Shapes

A modern bedroom moves away from a floral decor and towards lines and shapes such as circles, squares, and triangles. The first step many new homeowners take is to tear down the floral wallpaper and throw out the floral wall borders and murals. Once that is done, they update the room with solid neutral colors such as beige or white and accent with bold colors such as orange, red, or blue. Bedding should be kept simple, gender neutral, and solid colored in a modern master bedroom. An ideal blanket would be a neutral solid color with boldly colored, straight lines around the edges. Accent the bed with brightly colored throw pillows in various shapes and sizes placed neatly across the front of the standard pillows. Pillowcases and shams should match each other and the rest of the bedding.

Wall decor should also be kept simple with straight lines. Simple photographs framed with modern frames hung in small groups are ideal for a modern bedroom design; or choose one large wall artwork, such as a modern Southwestern wall art with sleek, abstract styling. If a mirror is desired, then it should be kept simple and placed so that it is not facing the bed, if you subscribe to feng shui principles. The modern bedroom should have minimal furniture that uses clean, straight edges verses the bulky, ornate pieces from the past. Instead of a large four-poster bed, choose a simple, straight-edged platform bed.

From Frumpy to Fashionable

Today’s modern families want their whole house to be considered a fashion statement rather than something out of an old photo album. A bedroom decorated with a large quantity of flowers tends to be considered frumpy and old fashioned. Too many floral patterns are also considered too feminine in today’s gender neutral society; however, flowers in small amounts placed strategically in the room add beauty and grace with more up to date flair.

Straight lines, smooth finishes, and basic furniture are the staples in today’s contemporary world and are considered fashionable and comfortable. A modern bedroom consists only of furniture that is necessary in the room, such as a bed, dresser, and nightstand equipped with a simple table lamp and alarm clock. Wall decor should be kept minimal, focused, and simply designed, such as photographs or prints of single objects, or solid colored art. Window treatments should also be kept simple, functional and not overly fussy or frilly. Blinds or shades installed on the windows with simple curtain panels provide a perfect opportunity to add contrast and texture to the room. Many designers are also opting for bold fabric shades that sport a modern design, letting these treatments stand on their own without addition embellishment.
