Adding a ceiling fan to a room can provide good air circulation, energy efficiency, and a beautiful visual accent. However, it's important to choose a fan that is sized correctly for the room. A fan that is too large will look out of place in the room, and could create too much air movement. On the other hand, a fan that is too small won't be able to provide adequate air circulation. Just like modern metal wall art or wrought iron sculptures that are too small for an oversized wall, a ceiling fan that is too small will also will look a bit lost in the room, since it won't be properly proportioned. Here are some tips you can use to make sure you choose the perfect fan for every room in your home.

Matching a Ceiling Fan to the Room Dimensions

When deciding on a ceiling fan size, first measure the room. For small rooms measuring up to 75 square feet, choose a fan with a 26 to 36 inch blade span. Rooms between 76 and 144 square feet generally require a fan with a 36 to 42 inch blade span, while a blade span of 44 inches works well for rooms sized between 144 and 225 square feet. If you have a very large room sized larger than 225 square feet, use a fan that has a blade span of 50 to 54 inches so that it looks properly proportioned. Of course, this measurement can vary depending on the overall layout of the room and the visual effect you are trying to achieve. For example, if you have a large room which measures over 225 square feet but you are visually dividing it up into several smaller living areas, you should measure the size of the individual living area to determine the proper fan size. This means if you have a designed a small dining area that measures 100 square feet, you might want to use a 36 to 42 inch fan in that area, instead of using one sized for the overall measurements of the room. Using multiple smaller fans in a large room is another interesting technique to use. For example, instead of using one large fan for a 450 square foot room, you could instead use two fans with a 44 inch blade span. This method of installing fans can also provide a lot of air movement versatility, since you can use them together or independently to control air flow.

Ceiling Height

The ceiling height of a room is also important when choosing the proper fan size and style. If you have ceilings lower than 8 feet, a flush mount fan is the best choice. A standard mount of flush mount fan can be used with a standard 8 foot ceiling. If you have 9 foot ceilings or a vaulted ceiling, choosing a fan with an extended mount will provide the best results. Choosing a mounting that works well with the room's overall ceiling height will provide a more attractive appearance, in addition to creating more effective air movement within the room. Of course, if you are installing a fan on a vaulted or angled ceiling, you may need to use a sloped mount.
